Its usually just one of the capacitors near the memory slot that is dry. Usually they will seem to bulge a bit. Replace them and the slot will be fine. :)

I appreciate the information, and will look for that in the future. In the meantime, I've already gotten Lois a newer laptop, and gifted the old one to a friend in need, who hasn't had any issues with it (and the 1GB stick) for a year. For now, I can safely ignore this, but will take note of your advice if it happens again!
